20 Events Honoring Alabama’s Veterans

Montgomery, Ala. — Celebrate Veteran’s Day in Alabama with 20 events, parades and tributes that will take place across the state.

Families can watch the renowned Veterans Day parade in downtown Birmingham — the largest and oldest celebration of its kind. Parade watchers in Anniston can see and touch military vehicles and equipment on display at the city’s Annual Veterans Day Parade. Visitors can climb aboard a WWII Battleship, the USS Alabama in Mobile and enjoy a free Pops concert at Battleship Memorial Park.

The tourism department compiled the following list of events that honors all military veterans.

 

Shelby County Veterans Day Ceremony & Tribute— Nov 6

Columbiana— free

The event honors the nation’s veterans with a ceremony on the Shelby County Courthouse lawn. 205.669.9075, www.shelbycountychamber.com.

 

Athens Veterans Day Parade and Celebration — November 5 & 11

Athens – downtown and VFW Lodge— free

The parade begins at Athens High School and will wind through the downtown streets on November 5 at 11 a.m. Following the parade the Disabled American Veterans will host a chicken stew meal at the DAV Building on Airport Road. Fairhope Veterans Day Parade– November 7

Downtown Fairhope— free

The parade begins and ends at Fairhope Civic Center and winds through downtown, featuring the Fairhope High School Band, the Veteran of the Year, and various veteran’s organizations. The parade starts at 10 a.m. For more information: 251.928.3292

 

Alexander City Veterans Day Service — November 7

Veteran’s Memorial Park— free

Join the Mayor and city leaders to pay respect to Alabama veterans of the Confederacy, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. 2-3 p.m. Contact: 256.234.3461, www.alexcityonline.com.

 

Patriots Day Luncheon & Veterans Day Parade— Nov. 9

Gadsden— cost for meal, free parade

Enjoy a meal at the Gadsden Convention Hall to honor the men and women who fought and served our country. Admission is charged. For more information: Gadsden-Etowah Patriots Association, 256.467.4042. Families are encouraged to come out for a parade honoring veterans in downtown Gadsden on historic Broad Street. Enterprise Veterans Day Parade & Ceremony— Nov. 10

Enterprise— free

The annual parade highlights the sacrifices of our troops. The theme for 2011 is the Korean War.  Parade held in Downtown Enterprise on Main Street, followed by the Veteran's Day Ceremony at the Enterprise Civic Center. National Veteran’s Day Parade— November 11

Downtown Birmingham— free

Enjoy the largest and oldest celebration of its kind in the U.S.  More than 5,000 participants, 15 bands and 50 floats will join in the Veteran’s Day celebration. 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. For more information call 205.325.1432.

 

Decatur’s Veterans Day Parade and Celebration — Nov. 11

Downtown Decatur – free

The parade begins at 2nd Avenue and will wind through the downtown streets at 7:30 a.m. The celebration ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the Morgan County Courthouse. For more information contact Theresa Groves, grovesrt@charter.net.

 

2nd Annual River Region Veterans Day Parade— Nov. 11

Downtown Montgomery— free

The celebration begins at 10 a.m. on the front steps of the State Capitol with a short program and a concert by the Capitol Sounds Concert Band and Chorus. For more information: www.visitingmontgomery.com.

 

Veteran's Day Parade— Nov. 11

Monroeville— free parade, cost for meal

Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony— Nov 11

Andalusia— free

A parade begins at 9 a.m. followed by a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park. For more information call 334.222.2030.

 

Anniston Annual Veterans Day Parade — November 11

Downtown Anniston— free

The tri-county parade honors those serving and those who served in all armed forces. Visitors can see a variety of military vehicles and equipment for the U.S. Department of Defense. 2 p.m. For more information contact: 256.236.0996, www.spiritofanniston.org.

 

Ardmore Veterans Day Program and Chicken Stew — November 11

Annex Building on Main Street— free

Huntsville Veterans Day Parade — November 11

Downtown beginning on Clinton Avenue— free

Huntsville celebrates Veterans Day with a parade at 11 a.m. A flag at the corner of Williams and Lowe Avenues will be raised to full mast followed by taps and a three-volley rifle salute. Contact: 256.533.4848.

 

Linden’s Veterans Day Parade— Nov 11

Linden— free

Mobile Bay Area Veterans Day Celebration — November 11

USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park— admission charged

Tuscumbia Veterans Day Parade —November 11

Main Street— free

Union Springs Veterans Day Ceremony — November 11

Courthouse Square— free

Music, a special guest speaker and a roll call of veterans highlight this event honoring veterans in downtown Union Springs at 11 a.m. Contact: 334.738.8687.

 

Wetumpka Veterans Day Observance- November 11

Pine View Memorial Gardens— free

The observance is hosted by members of Smith-Leonard VFW Post 4572, its Ladies Auxiliary and Chapter 263 of the Korean War Veterans Association. 11 a.m.



Musical Tribute to Veterans - November 12
Wetumpka Trinity Episcopal Church— free.

The public is welcome to the tribute that features Montgomery organist Kelley Garrett, Auburn University Chorus and area musicians and performers. All active military and veterans will be honored at a reception to follow. 7 p.m.
