June 07, 2010

For Immediate Release:

Contact: Carol Gunter
(334) 241-2726 (office)

We are very excited to announce the City’s plans for another Fourth of July STAYCATION.  The three-day event starts on Friday, July 2nd with an evening of Specials and Spirits.  We invite everyone to come and check out the downtown hotspots for deals on food, entertainment and beverages. Several of our downtown hotel partners are offering special hotel room rates, so please book your rooms soon at the Embassy Suites or The Renaissance Hotel and Spa.

On Saturday, July 3rd, the holiday weekend will continue with the Capital City Downtown Streetfest from 5 pm to 9 pm.  Bring the family downtown for train rides, inflatable’s, Fun Face Caricatures, temporary tattoos, discounted horse-drawn carriage rides by Capitol City Carriage, The Big Green Bus, The Party Palace will have animated characters that will mix and interact with the public and the characters will offer free face-painting and children’s crafts. In additions, there will be several water features, popcorn, cotton candy, roasted corn and other activities. A stage will be set-up on Tallapoosa Street beside the Stadium, which will feature Groove Factor Band.  New this year will be numerous street vendors on Commerce Street. Admission is free to the streetfest; however, some of the children’s activities will have a small charge.  Our hope is that everyone will come down early and enjoy any of our downtown establishments.

To close out the STAYCATION we will present our very popular Fourth of July Riverfront Celebration at the Riverwalk Amphitheater.  Gates will open at 6 pm. Admission is free and will feature entertainment again by Groove Factor Band. They will play a variety of popular patriotic sounds, along with other crowd favorites. There will be several food vendors, the Big Green Bus, the Splashpad, water slide, inflatables, Captain Hook’s pontoon boats and seadoo rentals and the Harriott II Riverboat will offer a Blue’s Cruise and a SPECIAL Fireworks Cruise.  The fireworks spectacular over the Alabama River will begin immediately following the 6:05 pm Biscuits baseball game.
